This is the detailed account of my genealogy search on the Orange family.  If you have any comments or information or desire additional information, please contact me at coachorange@yahoo.com. This information is organized with one page per generation starting with the preface and then the oldest known.  This information has been put on familysearch.org.  Also, I have a longer narrative that I call the Orange family history.

Summary: Jean Orange, oldest ancestor, was born about 1581 in Bolbec, Seine-Maritime, Upper Normandy, France.[i]  His ancestors left Bolbec for London, England in 1687 due to the persecution of French Protestants (Huguenots).  One of eight Orange siblings Louis Orange (Lewis/Louys) left England in 1700 aboard the Mary and Ann ship carrying French Refugees (Huguenots) to Virginia.  They were in Virginia until about 1811 when they moved to Tennessee.  About 1852, they arrived in Kentucky.  All of my subsequent ancestors were born in Kentucky, including myself.

A French dictionary of names lists Orange[ii] as originating from the city in France. Just a note, the famous William of Orange is not a relative, he took his name from the principality of Orange when he became prince.  Surnames were added in the 12th to 14th century usually based on your location, occupation or unique characteristic; record keeping was required of the Church in the 1500s.  The earliest records of the Orange family are in Bolbec, France in the 1500s which means they likely originated and took their name from a location near the Orne River (about 100 miles east of Bolbec) in Caen, France.

There will likely not be any older records found of the Orange family since the Mont-Criquet Temple was used as a place of worship no earlier than 1578.  Since they were Protestants, they were not allowed to have a church.  This Temple in Lintot, France was destroyed in 1659 and the second Temple built later was closed in 1681.[iii]

My direct ancestor is Jean Orange born in 1580.  These are likely eight siblings all born in Bolbec with christening in Lintot Temple all about the same time.  For famlysearch.org, I added a Jean Orange (father) to start the tree.  Likely father’s name but no information exists.
